The City of Easley’s Fire Chief, Butch Womack, began his career in public service in 1976 as a Cadet with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office. Developing a desire for public service work, he continued his years of service and in 1985 became a firefighter with the City of Easley. In 1991, his colleagues nominated him “Firefighter of the Year”. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1989 and continued to move up the ranks of leadership until in 1993 he was promoted Fire Chief for the City of Easley.
He has served twice as President of the Pickens County Fire Chief’s Association. He is a member of the International Association of Fire Chief’s, the SC Association of Fire Chief’s and the SC International Association of Arson Investigators.
Still seeking opportunities for the betterment of the fire service, he was nominated and elected Statistician for the SC State Firefighter’s Association in 2003. He served as Third, Second and First Vice President, culminating in the office of President in 2007. He is currently a member of the SC State Association of Fire Chief’s “Executive Board” and is slated to become President in 2012.
While serving as President of the SC State Firefighter’s Association, he was instrumental in forming the response team for “Line of Duty Death’s”. In the completion stages of forming this team, the Charleston Super Sofa Store fire occurred. Chief Womack and many others provided care for the families affected by this tragedy. It was one of the hardest jobs he has had to perform. In the following year as Past President of the SC State Firefighter’s Association, Chief Womack worked to see that all firefighters receive the training, education, and experience needed to perform their job with expertise, confidence and safety.
Chief Womack continues to aggressively pursue avenues that will make a difference in the everyday lives and survivability of our South Carolina firefighters.
